U.S. St. Stephen's Land Office - Registers' patent records, 1814-1861.

Patents are the final official certificate transferring title from the U.S. government to a private purchaser. Patents were issued by the General Land Office (GLO) only after a careful examination of all accounts and records sent to the GLO by district land offices. Once the GLO was satisfied that the purchaser had met all the necessary requirements and had made all the payments due on a tract of land, the office issued a patent, which was sent to the appropriate district land office. The district office was then responsible for notifying individuals that the patent was available and could be claimed at the office. If patents were unclaimed, they were returned to the GLO. District land office Registers kept records of patents received from the GLO, receipts signed by the purchasers acknowledging receipt of the patent and lists of unclaimed patents returned to the GLO. Generally such records include the patent number, the purchaser's name and the location of the tract. These records are useful for tracing the procedure by which an individual obtained ownership of public land. Included in this series are patent records 1814-1829, 1847, and 1850-1861.
